Popular DJ and cryptocurrency enthusiast Justin Blau, widely known as 3LAU, has stirred controversy in the crypto community by abruptly departing from the decentralized social media platform Friend.tech. He cited concerns about the regulatory risks associated with the platform as the primary reason for his decision.
In a statement made on September 15, 3LAU disclosed that he had left Friend.tech after becoming more aware of the potential risks. He expressed appreciation for the platform but deemed it too risky for his involvement. As a result, he announced his intention to donate 8 ETH to a music charity called the Fully Paid Foundation, an organization he is passionate about.
3LAU's main concern revolved around automated market makers (AMMs) on the platform, which facilitate the trading of user keys (formerly referred to as stocks). He pointed out that such features in social media platforms exist in a regulatory gray area and could potentially create problems for users. While he believed the risk was not necessarily high, he felt a responsibility to avoid ambiguous regulatory areas. He further explained that his brand is closely associated with AMMs, which added to his concerns.
This decision by 3LAU triggered significant reactions on various social media platforms, with many expressing support or criticism for his actions. Some accused him of abandoning his followers or using them as "exit liquidity." In response, 3LAU clarified that he would compensate anyone who had purchased his keys, acknowledging the potential financial impact these tokens could have on users.
In a follow-up statement, 3LAU acknowledged the drama surrounding his initial announcement and outlined his plan to compensate affected keyholders through a split contract. This contract would return the full value of the ETH prorated to 3LAU Friend.tech keyholders at the block where he sold the first key. Despite this compensation, he reaffirmed his commitment to donate the entire value of his keys to charity.
This incident sheds light on the challenges faced by users of social media platforms built on blockchain technology, especially when they decide to discontinue their involvement, as it may involve complex considerations and compensation arrangements.
