The Aragon Association (AA), governing body of aragonOS software, has announced its dissolution and the distribution of the majority of its assets to token holders. The AA intends to distribute 86,343 Ethereum, worth approximately $155 million at current prices, to its token holders as part of the unwinding process. These funds will be distributed through smart contracts on the Ethereum network. Each ANT token holder will receive 0.0025376 ETH (equivalent to $4.57 at current prices) for each ANT token they send into the redemption contract. After all redemptions are completed, the AA will burn all the ANT tokens held in the contract, rendering them useless.
The $11 million from the organization's coffers will be transferred to the Aragon Shield Fund, which will use the funds to repay outstanding debt and address regulatory uncertainty. The team plans to reorganize as a "company" to continue developing Aragon products, and they will establish a "product council" to guide decisions regarding product development.
Aragon is known for developing aragonOS, a suite of developer tools designed for creating decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). They have also created the Aragon App, which empowers developers to establish DAOs without the need for coding. The decision to disband the AA stems from challenges faced by the organization, including "bureaucratic complexities, stakeholder misalignment, and failed attempts to modify governance," which exacerbated tensions within the program. Despite their efforts to save the organization through various methods, they ultimately decided to return funds to investors and dissolve the association.
In May, a group called Risk-Free Value (RFV) Raiders made an attempt to take control of the Aragon vault by acquiring ANT tokens and outvoting the association, which the association referred to as a "51 percent attack." As a response to this, they canceled plans to transfer power to token holders. The team launched the Base web version of its DAO creation tool on August 9, demonstrating their continued commitment to the development of Aragon's products.
