Nolan Bushnell, the visionary behind Atari and the creator of the iconic game Pong, expressed his optimism regarding the future of Web3 gaming, particularly in terms of enabling ownership within virtual worlds. Speaking at the Digital Entertainment Leadership Forum in Hong Kong on August 25, Bushnell engaged in a discussion with Yat Siu, the co-founder of Animoca Brands, to explore the past, present, and potential future of the gaming industry. The panel was moderated by Sean Hung, Managing Partner of Chiron Group.
Regarded as the "father of gaming" by Siu, Bushnell highlighted how Web3 games are expanding the concept of ownership into the digital domain. He noted, "Games will increasingly mimic all elements of life. Web3 with blockchain suddenly transfers ownership to virtual world s. ” Currently serving as the chief knowledge officer at the Web3 gaming company Moxy, Bushnell shared that a recent conversation with Siu had a profound impact on his perspective, stating, "I'm literally stunned. I mean, we let you know that every once in a while you can have a conversation that changes your brain."
Bushnell envisions a future where the interior of self-driving cars could serve as mobile game studios, while Siu emphasized how Web3 games could enhance economic opportunities for players as gaming becomes an integral part of everyday life. Siu high lighted that the gaming landscape has evolved from A "player versus environment" model to a multiplayer ecosystem, citing games like Fortnite where players engage with each other online.
Addressing the potential of Web3 games, Bushnell underscored the significance of combining "KYC and the immutability of the blockchain" to ensure that players are genuine individuals and not bots or malicious entities. He also forecast that games will play a pivotal role in education , with students benefiting from immersive learning experiences.
Siu, however, pointed out certain challenges that have emerged with the rise of blockchain gaming. He emphasized that when introducing Web3 and blockchain into any system, including games, capitalism is introduced. While this financialization has led to issues such as toxicity in some play -to-earn games like Axie Infinity, Siu believes that the inherently capitalist nature of these games can provide a valuable financial education to younger players, enhancing financial literacy.
In conclusion, both Bushnell and Siu discussed the potential for Web3 gaming to shape various aspects of society, from ownership in virtual worlds to financial education and immersive learning experiences.
