Coinbase's Base network has introduced a user interface (UI) for its official bridge, allowing regular users to log in without relying on developer tools, as announced on August 3rd. The official launch date for Base has been set for August 9th. As part of The month-long "Onchain Summer" kickoff, the team plans to reward over 100 ETH (approximately $184,000) in grants to developers and content creators.
While the Base mainnet was launched for builders on July 13th, it lacked a functional UI for Ethereum bridges. This meant that users had to resort to command-line developer tools to bridge ETH to Ethereum Layer 1. However, the team's recent announcement states that the bridge UI is now live. Users can immediately start using the web interface, but some initial Web3 applications for Base might not be available until the general launch on August 9th.
Coinbase has also announced the "On-Chain Summer" celebration, lasting for a month. The team plans to host daily on-chain events featuring art, music, games, promotions, and more. During this period, from August 9th to September 13th , The Team Will Provideo Eth Grants to Individuals or Groups that Create Base-Related Websites, Art, VideoS, Or deploy New Protocols on the Network. Users w Ho Connect to the Network or Complete Educational Missions Will Also Receive Base-Related Non-FUNGIBLE tokens and ETH rewards.
The earlier limited access to Base, which was initially launched for builders, led to significant losses for some investors. The Pond0x (PNDX) memecoin, launched on Base on July 28th, suffered due to a bug in its transfer function, causing its price to plummet close to zero. Similarly, the Bald (BALD) memecoin caused around $1.9 million in losses when developers withdraw liquidity from the exchanges it was listed on. These incidents highlight the challenges that can arise when a platform meant for developers is used by regular investors without proper UI and support.
