In September, the Turkish Lira emerged as the leading fiat trading pair on Binance, a finding revealed by research conducted by the cryptocurrency exchange. Despite being the fourth-largest cryptocurrency market globally, trailing behind the United States, India, and the United Kingdom, the lira represented a significant 75% of all fiat currency trading volume at the onset of September. The surge in lira trading pairs is potentially linked to the recent influx of cryptocurrency investors entering the Turkish market. Binance's study indicated that 27% of participants began their cryptocurrency investment journey in the past year, with 8% joining within the last six months.
The study further unveiled that the majority of respondents hold cryptocurrency assets valued up to $175 (TL 5,000) and exhibit a preference for substantial investments in real estate. Profitability emerges as a major motivation for Turkey's interest in cryptocurrencies. Factors such as ease of monitoring, absence of minimum investment requirements, and low transaction costs were cited as significant drivers for new investors. However, the inherent risks associated with cryptocurrencies remain a deterrent for many Turkish investors.
Over the last three years, cryptocurrency adoption in Turkey has surged from 16% to 40%, earning the country the 12th spot in Chainanalysis's 2023 Global Cryptocurrency Adoption Index. Notably, Turkey received humanitarian aid in cryptocurrencies following the earthquake in 2023. Despite the increasing adoption, Turkey is reportedly working on new regulations to govern crypto assets, aiming to persuade the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to remove the country from its "grey list." In 2021, when the FATF placed Turkey on the grey list, Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek clarified that Turkey adhered to all but one of the 40 standards set by the regulator, which pertained to handling cryptocurrencies. To exit the grey list, Turkey proposed the introduction of a crypto-asset law without specifying the legal changes.
