The investigative team affiliated with Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange globally, played a pivotal role in aiding law enforcement to apprehend suspects involved in the ZKasino scam. The initial impetus for this investigation stemmed from widespread community outcry, prompting Binance's criminal compliance and investigations team to delve into the fraudulent gambling platform's operations.
Utilizing a blend of on-chain tracing techniques and open-source intelligence methods, researchers from Binance meticulously scrutinized ZKasino's smart contracts to uncover the individuals responsible for the fraudulent activities. By conducting behavioral network analysis, they were able to trace the perpetrators behind the smart contracts and identify the signatories linked to those addresses.
Upon successfully identifying the suspects behind the fraudulent smart contracts, Binance promptly notified law enforcement authorities regarding the identity of the account holder involved in the fraudulent activities. Subsequently, on April 29, the Fiscal Information and Investigation Directorate (FIOD) executed the arrest of a 26-year-old suspect and confiscated assets worth over 11.4 million euros ($12.2 million), including cryptocurrency, real estate, and luxury vehicles.
This arrest marks a significant milestone in the ongoing investigation into the ZKasino scam, which has resulted in investors suffering losses totaling at least $33 million in digital assets. The fraudulent platform initially enticed users with promises of recouping their investments within a 30-day period. However, Dutch authorities revealed that the smart contract employed by ZKasino indicated no intention of returning the funds.
Subsequent to the arrest, Binance took decisive action by freezing millions of dollars worth of cryptocurrency assets linked to the ZKasino scam, following law enforcement's issuance of a warrant for the attacker's account. Binance's investigative team underscored the critical role played by the community in identifying the suspect and aiding in his apprehension. Notably, popular crypto analyst FatMan and other investors suspected the involvement of the scammer known as Derivatives Ape, operating under the pseudonym ZKasino.
Despite the apprehension of the primary suspect, ongoing on-chain transactions suggest the involvement of multiple other perpetrators in the fraudulent scheme. Binance's investigative team reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure the restitution of stolen funds to affected investors. This proactive stance underscores Binance's dedication to combating fraudulent activities within the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
