Cryptocurrency-focused asset manager Hashdex has announced that Brian Brooks, the former acting comptroller of the currency in the US government, has joined its board of directors. Brooks, who has extensive experience in the financial regulation and crypto industry, will also serve as a strategic advisor to the company. Throughout his career, he has held notable positions, including chief legal officer of Coinbase, acting comptroller of the currency, CEO of Binance.US, and CEO of Bitfury.
Hashdex co-founder and CEO, Marcelo Sampaio, highlighted Brooks' expertise in financial regulation and the crypto sector as the reason for inviting him to join the board. Currently, Brooks is a managing partner at venture capital firm Valor Capital Group, which has Previously invested in various cryptocurrency companies.
Brooks expressed enthusiasm for the transformative power of crypto-assets, stating that they are reshaping the economics of industries worldwide, allowing individuals to have ownership in the networks they participate in. He looks forward to assisting Hashdex in achieving its vision of bridging the gap between traditional financial markets and the crypto economy. Brooks' short tenure as CEO of Binance.US in 2021 surprised many in the crypto space, and he cited differences in strategic direction at the time. However, a June SEC filing in the case against Binance reportedly suggested that Brooks was not given the autonomy to run the US exchange by Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao.
