In a tweet, the company announced that Binance.US had withdrawn from its agreement to purchase the assets of $1 billion of bankrupt cryptocurrency brokerage Voyager Digital. It blamed the "hostile and uncertain regulatory environment in the United States" for the move.
Voyager, Voyager's official committee of unsecured creditors and the US government reached an agreement on April 19 to complete the acquisition. The deal was blocked on March 28 by an emergency stay granted by a judge as the US Justice Department appealed Voyager' s bankruptcy plan.
Shortly before the Binance.US announcement, both Voyager and Voyager's official committee of unsecured creditors tweeted their dismay at the development. Voyager's official committee of unsecured creditors tweeted: "The Commission is deeply disappointed by this decision and is investigating potential claims against Binance.US .” In the case of Binance.US, it has decided to “exercise its right to terminate the asset purchase agreement.”
"While we want to help Voyager's customers physically access their cryptocurrencies throughout the process, the hostile and uncertain regulatory environment in the United States has introduced an unpredictable operating environment that has impacted the entire US business comm unity," the exchange said Express. It is unclear what prompted Binance.US to change its mind, as it must have become familiar with the US regulatory environment. The Twitter crypto community expressed sympathy for Binance.US.
“I'm surprised that Binance lasted this long. I would have bailed on all government harassment a long time ago,” StephenEllis_PR tweeted. Others were more emphatic in their condemnation. I'm surprised Binance has lasted this long. A long time ago , I would bail for all the government harassment.
However, this feeling is not universal. “Really, after you have all the information about us as a customer? So you paid us 10 million. I say you have a deal,” donterw replied to Binance.US.
Really, after you as a customer have all of our information? So you paid 10 million for us. I say you have an agreement on this matter. Both Voyager and the committee of creditors said they would now work on a “switch option” for Distributing cash and cryptocurrencies directly to customers through the Voyager platform. Voyager declared bankruptcy on July 5.
