Jonathan Goldsmith, famed for his role as "the most interesting man in the world" in Dos Equis beer commercials, has recently reprised his iconic image to endorse Bitwise Asset Management's Bitcoin Exchange Traded Fund (ETF). On December 18, he took a twist on his classic line, telling his audience, "You know what's interesting lately? Bitcoin. Look for Bitwise, my friends," instead of his usual "Stay thirsty, my friends" while holding a Dos Equis.
Goldsmith was the face of Dos Equis from 2006 to 2018, portraying "the most interesting man in the world" in a series of popular ads that included quirky facts about his character. These ads gained a cult following, with lines like "He's the only one to ace a Rorschach test" and "He's on the upgrade list for flights he hasn’t even booked." Although Goldsmith briefly returned to this role for a 2019 Super Bowl ad and a tequila brand, his presence has largely diminished in recent years, with occasional reappearances in memes.
Now 85, Goldsmith's involvement with Bitwise coincides with the asset manager's ongoing effort to secure approval from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for a Bitcoin ETF. The SEC has yet to approve any spot BTC or ETH exchange-traded products for listing and trading on U.S. exchanges. Following a delay in their decision on Bitwise’s spot BTC ETF in August, the asset manager revised its application in September.
Hiring renowned personalities like Goldsmith for promotional campaigns is a common strategy among major cryptocurrency firms. While these campaigns often garner attention and success, the celebrities involved sometimes face legal challenges, especially after market downturns or regulatory actions, as seen with Cristiano Ronaldo's promotion of Binance and Tom Brady's advertisements for FTX.
