On January 2, the creator of the Bitcoin BRC-20 token standard, known as Domo, expressed strong opposition to the impending fork of UniSat Wallet, signaling concerns about the hurried integration of updates into BRC-20. Domo cited the potential disregard for peer indexers and cautioned that such rushed modifications might negatively impact the broader BRC-20 user community. He specifically pointed to recent bugs related to Ordinals 0.8 and 0.9 updates, indicating the escalating complexities in integrating new updates into the BRC-20 standard. Domo emphasized the necessity for robust testing, coordination, and validation infrastructure before such alterations are implemented.
Highlighting the importance of careful consideration in making changes to the BRC-20 standard, Domo suggested that UniSat's proposed fork was part of an ongoing strategy, hinting at a potential agreement designed to gain control. However, UniSat later clarified that their proposed "fork" is, in fact, more accurately described as a "split." This split aims to segregate the BRC-20 version 0.9 assets from the upcoming Ordinals Jubilee upgrade. Despite the segregation, both sets of assets would remain within the same physical blockchain but adhere to different rules.
UniSat developers assured that they intend to follow the Ordinals Jubilee upgrade to ensure that BRC-20 remains on Ordinals and does not evolve into an isolated protocol. They hinted at releasing a new white paper in January, detailing their plans and protocol enhancements, which were initially released on December 31.
The BRC-20 token, lauded as one of Bitcoin's significant technological advancements, employs the Bitcoin Serial Number to assign a unique number to each Satoshi, allowing tracking and transmission. By combining the serial numbering system and inscription process that adds data layers to each Satoshi, users can create unique digital assets on the Bitcoin blockchain. The inception of the Bitcoin Ordinals system in January 2023 by developer Casey Rodarmor inspired Domo to create the BRC-20 token standard in March 2023. Presently, the total market capitalization of BRC-20 tokens stands at $1.76 billion.
