The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is actively seeking a digital asset solution to streamline the confusion and safekeeping of cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The RCMP has issued a public bidding opportunity on August 10 for the development of a centralized repository solution that can facilitate the seizure of these assets while ensuring robust security against potential theft during storage.
The RCMP has outlined 17 specific requirements for the proposed repository. Among these requirements are the capacity to process blockchain transactions for the top 20 cryptocurrencies based on market capitalization and the ability to accommodate upcoming blockchain networks. The repository is al so expected to grant authorized users access to its stored data. Additionally, the solution should be equipped to handle NFTs based on Ethereum, Solana, and Polygon, reflecting the evolving landscape of digital assets.
Several security aspects are integral to the repository's design, including measures for safeguarding private keys, secure disposal processes, and automated daily verification routines. The initiative also involves the development of native mobile applications for Android devices. Notably, Canadian law enforcement has recently adopted specialized software from Chainalysis to track cryptocurrencies during investigations, enhancing their ability to trace blockchain transactions and identify individuals involved in cybercrime. Concurrently, the proportion of Canadians holding Bitcoin has dipped from 13.1% in 2021 to 1 0.1% in 2022.
