CCP Games, the renowned developer and publisher behind Eve Online, has unveiled the latest details about its highly anticipated blockchain game, Awakening. Through two posts on the game's official website dated March 13, the company announced the upcoming Project Awakening playtest and hackathon slated for May 21. Presently, registration for the closed beta is open for interested participants.
In addition to revealing the event details, the posts offer a sneak peek into the game's universe and lore. According to CCP, Project Awakening will immerse players in a single-shard survival experience set in the vast expanse of space, where civilization has crumbled under its own ambitions. The gameplay is expected to center around themes of survival, reconstructing a ravaged world, and engaging in combat.
CCP has hinted at incorporating blockchain gaming elements into Project Awakening, although specific details remain elusive. The company envisions a persistent world governed by digital physics, facilitating player collaboration and creativity through blockchain technology and cryptography. While the exact implementation remains undisclosed, this suggests the potential for digital asset ownership or other forms of blockchain-driven features within the game.
One of the blog posts from March 13 adopts the perspective of a non-player character, offering a glimpse into the game's narrative. However, it primarily serves as a tantalizing preview rather than an exhaustive exploration of the game world. Lines like "The Gate Network hasn't had thought meat coursing through its veins for too long" contribute to the atmospheric buildup rather than elucidating concrete details.
According to CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, participants in the hackathon will leverage the Carbon development platform to introduce new features and functionalities to the game world. While familiarity with the Solidity programming language is advantageous, it is not mandatory. The company anticipates the community's creativity and ingenuity to flourish during the hackathon, building upon the success of previous endeavors.
