China has launched a pilot project for its central bank digital currency (CBDC), the digital yuan, which will allow Chinese business travelers to pay for air tickets using the CBDC. China Merchants Bank has partnered with the Civil Aviation Administration of China to launch the digital yuan platform, aimed at facilitating transactions for travelers across the airline network. The platform enables businesses and entrepreneurs to conveniently pay for business air tickets with the digital yuan, and passengers can access new services through the platform as well.
The Suzhou-based China Travel Agency has already utilized the platform to purchase tickets on behalf of its clients. During the official launch of the platform on July 18, both the Civil Aviation Administration and China Merchants Bank called for more use cases for the digital yuan. They stated their intention to cooperate in exploring further applications of the CBDC in various fields of the civil aviation industry. China's central bank, the People's Bank of China, has been actively promoting the use of the digital yuan in the country's transportation network.
Beijing Daxing International Airport and Beijing Capital International Airport had previously partnered on a cargo-related digital renminbi initiative in 2022. The CBDC pilot zone's rail network, light rail links, subway system, and bus lines have all been upgraded to facilitate seamless digital yuan payments, independent of electricity or network connections. Several expressway tollbooths in the pilot zone also began accepting the digital yuan as a payment method.
The CBDC pilot program is continuously expanding in various sectors, demonstrating China's commitment to transforming its economy by promoting widespread adoption of the digital yuan. In Shenzhen alone, nearly 36 million digital yuan wallets have been opened by residents, with over 7 million new wallets created since the beginning of 2023. This ongoing expansion highlights China's determination to solidify the digital yuan's position in the country's financial landscape.
