A fake digital yuan app has been discovered, according to a post on China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology WeChat. The Trojan download is very similar to the official version, but subtle differences can be detected.
In addition to "pulling bonuses," the fake app can also collect sensitive user information and provide fake customer service, guiding users to use "uncommon social tools" to facilitate the seizure of user funds, the ministry said. The fake central bank digital currency app uses a different logo than the genuine app outline, and its user interface is different but comparable. The fake application has a different name than the real application, as well as a different version number and MD5 message digest identifier.
No information was provided about the parties behind the scam or the steps being taken to stop it. Cointelegraph was unable to find the fake app in the Apple or Google Play stores. This is not the first digital yuan application to be suspected of fraud. Similar scams were uncovered in 2021 and 2022. On October 13, Zhou Xiaochuan, former governor of the People's Bank of China, said in a speech at the 2023 China (Beijing) Digital Finance Forum:
“As technology becomes cheaper and systems become more convenient, the cost of abuse will become lower and lower.
Zhou went on to say that this trend “should be highly valued in the development of digital currencies.” Despite its tough anti-crypto policies, China has experienced several high-profile crypto-related crimes. Rogue foreign exchange traders used cryptocurrencies to export funds from China, with transactions worth $2.2 billion uncovered in December.Chinese authorities claim that concerns about data theft and money laundering drive their campaign against cryptocurrencies, but others say combating capital flight is their real motivation.
In 2023, digital RMB transaction volume will reach US$250 billion. At the end of that year, a Chinese court seized a digital yuan wallet in a civil case over an investment dispute.
