According to a report by Axios on July 24, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong stated that US lawmakers are focusing on regulatory clarity in the cryptocurrency space after discussions with key officials. On July 20, Armstrong met with lawmakers to discuss and vote on legi slation aimed at clarifying the regulation of digital assets. The recent SEC lawsuit against Ripple, in which the court largely deemed XRP ineligible for securities, has added urgency to the discussions among MPs.
Armstrong mentioned that Rep. Patrick McHenry is particularly committed to the legislation, and Maxine Waters is also looking into the issue. He pointed out that the Ripple case and recent Bitcoin ETF filings by major financial firms like BlackRock and Fidelity have brought a lot of ur agency to the regulatory discussions. Various draft bills related to cryptocurrencies and blockchain are currently being discussed in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, including the 21st Century Financial Innovation and Technology Act, the Responsible Financial Innovation Act, and the Digit al Assets Anti-Money Laundering Act.
The SEC is also suing Coinbase, accusing the cryptocurrency exchange of violating securities laws. The company's executives have publicly contested the allegations, arguing that the commission is taking an overly strict approach to cryptocurrency regulation. In May, Coinbase had plans to organize a "Pro -Crypto Day" on July 19 in Washington, DC, with the aim of rallying support for crypto-friendly policies among members of Congress. However, there is no evidence of the event happening as scheduled, and it remains unclear if it took place in a different form.
The SEC's lawsuit against Ripple and the ongoing discussions on regulatory clarity are pushing lawmakers to consider legislative solutions rather than relying solely on court rulings. The developments in the cryptocurrency space have heightened the importance of establishing clear and comprehensive regulations to ensure the stability and growth of the industry.
