Vishal Gupta, the former head of the Coinbase exchange, is reportedly leaving the U.S. cryptocurrency exchange after more than two years.
Gupta plans to exit Coinbase but remain in the cryptocurrency space, Bloomberg reported on April 10, suggesting he may be planning to launch a new project focused on digital assets or blockchain. Before joining Coinbase, Gupta was the head of USDC. For stablecoin issuer Circle, previously a VP at Goldman Sachs.
The exchange chief’s departure reportedly comes amid Coinbase’s legal and regulatory review. In March, the cryptocurrency exchange reported receiving a Wells notice from the SEC, suggesting possible enforcement action. Coinbase is also supporting plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control’s decision to sanction Tornado Cash mixers.
At the time of publication, neither Gupta’s LinkedIn page nor his Twitter profile indicated any changes to his work at Coinbase. Cointelegraph also reached out to Coinbase about Gupta, but did not hear back.
