On August 29, Coinbase shares experienced a significant surge in value after reports surfaced that a federal judge had ruled in favor of Grayscale in its legal dispute with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). By the end of the trading session, COIN's price had climbed to $85.13 per share, marking a more than 15% increase from the previous day's closing price. As the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States, Coinbase has been publicly listed on Nasdaq since 2021.
The federal court's ruling on August 29 determined that the SEC had not provided consistent reasons for denying Grayscale's request to transform its Bitcoin trust into traditional exchange-traded funds (ETFs). This decision was perceived by investors as a win for the cryptocurrency space, igniting hopes that a Bitcoin ETF could soon become a reality. Coinbase has been identified as a potential custodian and partner for data monitoring collaboration among some of the ETF candidates seeking approval.
Should the ETF gain approval, Coinbase will play a crucial role by sharing data related to trading, clearing operations, and customer identification. This partnership aims to mitigate the risk of market manipulation and ensure the secure storage of Bitcoin backing the fund's shares. Presently, The US lacks spot Bitcoin ETFs due to the SEC's cautious approach, with only domestic cryptocurrency ETFs linked to futures contracts available for investors looking to speculate on future digital asset prices.
However, investors are actively seeking an investment vehicle that offers direct exposure to Bitcoin, and several prominent applicants, including BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, have applied for SEC approval. BlackRock's CEO, Larry Fink, acknowledged strong customer demand for cryptocurrency investments. As of the time of writing, Bitcoin was trading at $27,982 per coin, registering a more than 7% increase in the past 24 hours, although it remains significantly lower, down nearly 60%, from its November 2021 peak of $69,044.
