Cryptocurrency investment firm CoinShares is actively pursuing the potential acquisition of its U.S. counterpart, Valkyrie Funds, which is also an issuer of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). CoinShares confirmed its strategic decision to acquire Valkyrie and intensify its efforts to enter the U.S. market. While the terms of the deal were not disclosed, a CoinShares spokesperson emphasized the company's ambition to become a leading global investment firm focused on digital assets.
This move by CoinShares is directly linked to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) approval of Valkyrie's spot Bitcoin ETF, along with 10 others. Valkyrie's Bitcoin ETF, known as the Valkyrie Bitcoin Fund, commenced trading on Nasdaq on January 11 under the ticker BRRR. The acquisition is contingent on completing satisfactory due diligence, finalizing necessary legal agreements, and obtaining final approval from CoinShares' Board of Directors. Until the acquisition is fully executed, Valkyrie Funds will maintain its operational independence.
CoinShares initially secured the option to acquire Valkyrie's cryptocurrency unit in November 2023, and this option is expected to remain in effect until March 31. The potential acquisition aligns with CoinShares' strategy to expand its digital asset offerings in the U.S., capitalizing on positive developments in the regulatory environment. CoinShares aims to provide U.S. investors with regulated access to digital asset products.
The collaboration between CoinShares and Valkyrie in the ETF space mirrors similar partnerships between major European crypto investment firms and U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF issuers. The combination of CoinShares' expertise and Valkyrie's strengths is anticipated to drive innovation in the U.S. digital asset investment space, particularly in the digital asset ETF market, according to Jean-Marie Mognetti, CEO of CoinShares, and Leah Wald, CEO of Valkyrie. Notably, such partnerships have become a trend in the evolving landscape of cryptocurrency investments.
