A Twitter hashtag related to the so-called artificial intelligence cryptographic token "CryptoGPT" has been trending on Twitter. At the same time, a number of very similar-looking Twitter accounts have sprung up some of which have been peddling giveaways that may be fake.
As of this writing, "Download CryptoGPT" has become a trending topic, with 6,185 tweets related to it. GPT-4 (Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4), an unpublished neural network created by OpenAI, also has 4,683 tweets. Meanwhile, dozens of Twitter accounts named "CryptoGPT" can also be found on Twitter, some of which may offer fake giveaways or airdrops
Many of these accounts describe the so-called project as allowing users to use blockchain to monetize their data through AI. The system is based on Ethereum and scaled with a zero-knowledge rollup layer 2 network.
The project purportedly aims to attract decentralized application developers to build on its blockchain. CrypoGPT will offer its GPT tokens as payment for anonymized user data generated using these DApps. However, contrary to what its name might suggest, the project does not appear to be directly related to the ChatGPT AI chatbot that has taken the internet by storm in recent months. Crypto tokens also appear to be supported by certain crypto exchanges, at least from a listing perspective.
On March 8, Bitfinex announced that it would list CryptoGPT’s native GPT token two days later, describing it as a project aimed at providing users with the opportunity to earn cryptocurrency by sharing anonymous data. Other exchanges that will reportedly list GPT tokens include PancakeSwap, ByBit, Gate, MEXC, and Bitget, among others. Earlier this year, blockchain analytics firm PeckShield warned its followers about dozens of so-called “pump and dump” tokens allegedly linked to ChatGPT and Bing AI.
Pump and dump schemes typically involve the creator orchestrating a campaign of misleading statements and hype to convince investors to buy tokens and then secretly sell their stake in the scheme as the price rises.
