Researchers at the University of Tsukuba in Japan have developed a novel artificial intelligence (AI)-powered cryptocurrency portfolio management system called CryptoRLPM. This system is the first of its kind to utilize on-chain data for training, according to the researchers. The AI system leverages reinforcement learning, a training technique that allows the AI to interact with its environment, in this case, a cryptocurrency portfolio, and update its training based on reward signals.
CryptoRLPM incorporates reinforcement learning throughout its architecture, utilizing five main units to process information and manage structured portfolios. These units include the data feed unit, data refinement unit, portfolio proxy unit, real-time transaction unit, and proxy update unit. The system was tested by creating and allocating three different portfolios, each containing different combinations of Bitcoin, Storj (STORJ), Bluzelle (BLZ), and Chainlink.
The experiments were conducted over a two-year period from October 2020 to September 2022 and involved three phases: training, validation, and backtesting. The researchers compared the performance of CryptoRLPM against a baseline assessment of standard market performance using metrics such as the Accumulated Return Rate (AAR), Daily Return Rate (DRR), and Sortino Ratio (SR). These metrics measure the asset's loss or gain over time and its risk-adjusted return.
According to the researchers' preprint research paper, CryptoRLPM demonstrated significant improvements over the baseline performance. The system improved the Accumulated Return Rate by at least 83.14%, Daily Return Rate by at least 0.5603%, and Sortino Ratio by at least 2.1767 when compared to the benchmark performance of Bitcoin.
The successful development and performance of CryptoRLPM highlight the potential of utilizing AI and reinforcement learning techniques in cryptocurrency portfolio management. By incorporating on-chain data and employing sophisticated algorithms, this AI-powered system aims to enhance portfolio management strategies and improve investment outcomes in the cryptocurrency market.
