While tech giants around the world are working on the idea of generating artificial intelligence (AI) to help humans in their daily lives, some see a looming risk of the emerging technology going rogue. With this possibility in mind, Tesla and Twitter chief Elon Musk have warned of AI's potential to destroy civilization.
Musk's plans to create a new AI startup surfaced on March 15 after the entrepreneur reportedly assembled a team of AI researchers and engineers. However, Musk went on to stress the disruptive potential of AI -- like any other technology -- if it falls into the wrong hands or is exploited maliciously.
According to Musk, artificial intelligence can be dangerous. In an interview with FOX, he said AI could be more dangerous than poorly managed aircraft design or production maintenance, for example. While acknowledging the odds are slim, he said: "No matter how unlikely one might think that possibility is, it's not insignificant -- it has the potential to destroy civilization."
As the Crypto Twitter discussion began, Musk then strongly supported his statement: "Anyone who thinks this risk is 0% is an idiot." Tech entrepreneurs like Bill Gates, on the other hand, remain more optimistic about artificial intelligence and its positive impact on humanity.
On April 13, Amazon became the latest tech giant to join the race to create artificial intelligence services. Amazon Bedrock allows users to build and scale generative AI applications. According to a blog post announcing the service, Bedrock allows users to "privately customize underlying models with their own data and easily integrate and deploy them into their applications."
