A recent report by LSE Consulting, a subsidiary of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), outlines Europe's potential trajectory toward dominance in the emerging Web4 landscape. The report proposes the establishment of an Airbus-style industrial consortium dedicated to fostering innovation and growth in the virtual universe as the most viable strategy for the EU to compete with global industry leaders such as the United States and China.
Drawing parallels with Airbus, the multinational conglomerate formed in 2000 through the merger of three European airlines, the report suggests that its cross-border structure and commitment to maintaining Europe's prominence in the aerospace sector could serve as a blueprint for success in the Metaverse market. By adopting the Airbus Virtual Universe model, the EU could position itself as a frontrunner in the Web4 hierarchy.
The Immersive Industry Cluster envisioned by LSE Consulting is projected to enhance Europe's expertise in professional internet engineering. The report underscores the importance of national and regional governments' support for engineering and research education initiatives, with immersive technologies poised to augment the appeal and effectiveness of these programs.
Case studies from renowned European companies like BMW, IKEA, and Ericsson, among others, are cited as evidence of the continent's existing groundwork in exploring Metaverse technology. Leveraging these successes, LSE Consulting proposes three key recommendations to propel the industry forward: establishing an international consortium akin to Airbus for European virtual universe innovation, prioritizing skills training to equip the workforce for virtual innovation challenges, and fostering government support for innovative cross-border solutions and standard adoption.
Michael Barngrover, managing director of LSE Consulting, emphasizes the critical juncture Europe finds itself in regarding its potential paths forward. As discussions unfold on the continent's strategic direction, Barngrover underscores the importance of considering and deliberating the avenues available for Europe's advancement in the Metaverse landscape.
