Manchester City, a Premier League football club, is introducing a fresh line of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), offering fans the chance to obtain exclusive jerseys and matchday experiences through the "Unseen City Shirts" campaign. This initiative marks the latest development in the club's ongoing collaboration with cryptocurrency exchange OKX. Users can create digital collectibles via the OKX app, with the rarity of the NFTs determining the potential rewards, including custom-designed football jerseys. Haider Rafique, OKX Global's Chief Marketing Officer, and Nuria Tarré, Manchester City's Chief Marketing and Fan Experience Officer, elaborated on the campaign's specifics.
The limited-edition jersey design integrates elements like the Lancashire rose and the Manchester worker bee, crafted by artist Christian Jeffery. Rafique detailed that the NFT's rarity is algorithmically determined, with ultra-rare NFTs offering premier matchday experiences, including match tickets and exclusive jerseys. Additional rare NFTs offer stadium tour opportunities and hospitality vouchers, complemented by specially designed jerseys. OKX users have the opportunity to mint these NFTs for free via the OKX Marketplace.
Tarré emphasized that the introduction of NFTs aligns with Manchester City's strategy to engage with a technologically savvy audience and introduce digital ownership to their fanbase. She expressed the significance of digital ownership in the Web3 landscape, highlighting its transformative impact on ownership dynamics. The club aims to further explore Web3 possibilities through collaborations with OKX and other avenues, actively experimenting with emerging technologies in both Web2 and Metaverse environments.
Manchester City's foray into the Roblox world in late 2022 marked their initial steps into the Web3 realm, with Tarré underscoring the progressive and dynamic nature of this environment. She emphasized the potential for technological evolution and increased complexity, fostering new levels of creation and co-creation. Rafique, who has been instrumental in OKX's prominent sports partnerships, emphasized the exchange's efforts to cater to the fan bases of sports brands like Manchester City and Formula One team McLaren. He highlighted OKX's aim to build utility-based ecosystems, starting with NFTs tied to physical goods and progressing towards more advanced offerings as the industry evolves.
OKX's collaboration with Manchester City began in March 2022 and has since expanded, with OKX becoming the club's official training equipment partner for the 2022-2023 season and later securing a deal to become Manchester City's official sleeve partner in June 2023. This partnership underscores OKX's commitment to leveraging sports sponsorships to engage with fans and develop innovative offerings within the Web3 landscape.
