FIFA, the international governing body for football, has revealed plans to introduce its series of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) ahead of the 2023 Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia. This initiative comes in collaboration with blockchain firm Modex and is set to be a part of the upcoming tournament's fan engagement strategy.
In an announcement made on December 11, it was disclosed that the first batch of 100 exclusive NFTs would debut on December 15, offering participants the chance to win tickets to the prestigious 2026 FIFA World Cup Finals. Additionally, an extra 900 digital collectibles are slated for release this month on the Polygon Network and OpenSea. These collectibles will encompass memorable moments from the tournament and digital renditions of cherished memorabilia.
FIFA underscored the significance of the FIFA Club World Cup, commencing on December 12 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, featuring seven illustrious teams from around the world. It will witness the participation of the champions from FIFA's six confederations. The NFTs will be available on FIFA's dedicated platform, FIFA+ Collect, which was launched in September 2022 and operates on the Algorand blockchain network.
Expressing support for FIFA's venture into digital collectibles, Francesco Abbate, CEO of Modex, emphasized the broadening scope for fan engagement through interactive elements involving beloved players, teams, and the essence of the game itself.
Since its inception, the FIFA+ Collect platform has facilitated 11 NFT launches and minted a substantial number of digital collectibles, totaling 909,255. Currently, the platform boasts 16,448 holders and has garnered significant trading volume amounting to $2.4 million across primary and secondary NFT markets. Nonetheless, there's a disclaimer from FIFA+ Collect Info, suggesting that the reported mint volume might not exclusively account for packs obtained through free challenges versus those purchased via USDC.
