Google is contemplating integrating advanced features driven by generative artificial intelligence (AI) into its search engine, marking the potential debut of a core Google product behind a paywall. Despite this, a free search experience supported by ads will remain accessible.
According to a report by the Financial Times on April 3, the tech giant is exploring various possibilities, including the integration of AI-driven search capabilities into its premium subscription service. This service, already offering new Gemini AI in Gmail and Docs, might extend to include advanced features for search functionality.
While Google primarily relies on advertising revenue, it has diversified its offerings with subscription plans like Gemini AI Assistant in Gmail and Docs. However, these subscriptions currently do not enhance the search experience, which has been free since Google's inception in the early 2000s. Nevertheless, the company appears to be exploring new avenues for monetizing its search engine.
Despite potential premium features, Google's traditional search engine will remain free, with ads continuing to accompany search results, even for subscribers. Amidst increased competition in AI technology, most tech companies are striving to introduce innovative products to the market.
Google has been experimenting with AI-powered search tools, combining custom narratives with web links and ads. However, the integration of these tools into major search engines has been slow due to delayed feature adoption of experimental "search-generated experiences." Furthermore, AI queries demand greater computing power, potentially increasing operational costs. Therefore, offering these "search generation experiences" for free might not be financially viable for Google.
A Google spokesperson clarified that the company currently has no plans to offer an ad-free search experience. Instead, they emphasized Google's commitment to continually develop premium features and services to enhance subscription offerings.
In February, Google introduced a new paid tier to its consumer subscription service, providing access to its latest AI model, Gemini. Subscribers to Google One AI Premium can leverage advanced features like the Gemini chatbot and access generative AI models in popular services such as Gmail and Google Docs. While Google remains a frontrunner in AI technology, it faces competition from prominent industry players like OpenAI and Microsoft.
