Google is implementing a new policy update regarding political content that will require all verified election advertisers to disclose the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in their campaign materials. This disclosure will be mandatory when advertisers utilize "synthetic content resently" that prelisted actual people or events. Google emphasized that these notifications must be prominently displayed where users can easily notice them.
However, Google clarified that advertisements containing synthetic content that has been altered or generated in a way that isn't crucial to the ad's claims will be exempt from these disclosure requirements. For instance, routine AI-driven editing processes like resizing, cropping, color correction, or minor enhancements that don't create a deceptive depiction of real events won't require disclosure.
This updated policy will encompass various forms of content, including images, videos, and audio, and it is set to be implemented by mid-November 2023. Significantly, this timeline aligns with the lead-up to the November 2024 US presidential election. The disclosure of AI-generated content has become a focal point, especially with the rise of powerful AI tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT, making it easier to generate and distribute such content. Google, along with other tech giants, is increasingly prioritizing AI tools and services.
Google's CEO previously expressed his vision of transitioning the company into an "AI-first company." This strategic shift aligns with Google's ongoing efforts to integrate AI-driven enhancements into its products and services, such as its AI-powered search engine upgrades. Additionally , Google has collaborated with industry peers like OpenAI and Microsoft to establish the Frontier Model Forum, aimed at fostering self-regulation within the AI industry.
Google's commitment to AI policy extends to its subsidiary, YouTube, which recently unveiled a set of guiding principles for collaborating with the music industry on AI-related technologies. These initiatives reflect the growing importance of addressing the ethical and transparency concerns associated with the increasing use of AI in various domains, including advertising and content creation.
