Coinbase users have taken to Twitter to report scams and phishing attacks involving the cryptocurrency exchange's services and apps. One recent case involved a Twitter user named Daniel Mason who received text messages and emails from scammers using the Coinbase.com domain. The fraudster contacted Mason with a real phone number and sent an email from the Coinbase.com domain, followed by a phishing text message containing a Coinbase subdomain URL. The scammer proceeded to verify Mason's personal information, including his address, social security number, and driver's license number. Sim ilar Incidents have been reported on Coinbase's support page, where users complain of various types of scams and phishing attempts.
The person called Coinbase's support line to verify the authenticity of emails claiming their user account had been compromised. An employee confirmed that the email was legitimate but later discovered it was the work of a hacker. The victim alleged that the hacker, authenticated as a Co inbase employee by the support line, stole their cryptocurrency. Despite having evidence of the call and the employee they spoke to, Coinbase has not held anyone accountable. The case is currently in litigation, with the victim claiming to have lost around $50,000 in assets.
These reports align with the experience of Twitter user Jacob Canfield, who also encountered scammers claiming changes to his two-factor authentication (2FA). They then directed him to the "security" team to verify his account, gathering personal information along the way. Canfield received an email from help@coinbase.com, but the scammers became frustrated when he didn't receive a "captcha" email as requested. Help@coinbase.com is an official address listed on Coinbase's support page, and the company emphasizes that its employees will never ask for passwords, verification codes, or remote access to devices.
In response to these incidents, Coinbase stated that it has robust security resources dedicated to educating customers about preventing scams and phishing attacks. The company collaborates with international law enforcement to ensure that those defrauding Coinbase customers face legal consequences. Coinbase aims to protect its users from Such fraudulent activities and encourages customers to remain vigilant and follow security best practices to safeguard their accounts and funds.
