On December 19, HyperPlay, a PC game launcher akin to platforms like Steam, Epic Games Store, and GoG (formerly Good Old Games), announced a significant update. This update integrates its wallet overlay with MetaMask Snaps, enabling players to utilize custom wallet applications within their games. HyperPlay stands out in the gaming market with its unique feature: an in-built version of the Web3 wallet MetaMask appearing as an overlay. This integration allows blockchain gamers to confirm transactions directly within games, bypassing the need to use a browser wallet.
MetaMask Snaps, a feature launched on September 12, permits third-party developers to create applications that operate within MetaMask itself. Initially, HyperPlay's overlay feature wasn't compatible with this new offering. However, the latest software upgrade from HyperPlay has now seamlessly integrated both functionalities. HyperPlay founder JacobC.eth, this integration opens up a range of new features. Most notably, it allows transactions on various blockchains previously incompatible with wallet transactions, such as Sui, StarkWare, and Solana.
One significant example cited by JacobC.eth is the third-person shooter game Bushi, which offers in-game items on the Sui blockchain. Bushi has been particularly popular on HyperPlay, yet it previously lacked the ability to confirm transactions via the in-game overlay due to Sui's non-compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). With the new integration, players can now install a snap supporting Sui, enabling in-game transaction confirmations, a feature that will be prompted upon the first transaction attempt in the game.
Looking ahead, HyperPlay's founders anticipate that snap-compatible overlays will provide even greater utility. An upcoming feature will allow players to authorize games to spend their funds within set limits. This enhancement aims to streamline the gaming experience for titles that involve frequent transactions, reducing the need for manual confirmation of each transaction. Furthermore, this system will be implemented through account abstraction, ensuring that players don't have to trust the game with direct access to their funds.
HyperPlay has shown significant growth and potential in the gaming sector, having raised over $12 million in Series A funding in June. At that time, the platform supported 33 game titles. It also offers a unique feature allowing players to integrate their GoG and Epic Games accounts, further enhancing its appeal as a comprehensive gaming interface.
