The Indonesian government's national cryptocurrency exchange has officially commenced operations, as confirmed by Indonesia's Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency (Bappebti) in a recent statement. The platform is now the only legally authorized space in the country for trading digital assets. Bappebti announced that the exchange went live on July 20, and it has also established a futures clearinghouse in collaboration with the exchange to facilitate smooth transactions between buyers and sellers.
The previous announcement indicated that the cryptocurrency sales on this exchange will be limited to local transactions, while keeping in sync with international market developments. Licensed traders will have a one-month window to join the exchange. The inception of this exchange has been in progress since at least December 2021, and it experienced a delay, originally set to launch at the end of 2022, which was rescheduled to June 2023 due to the vetting process for potential participants. The country's Trade Minister, Zulkifli Hasan, had previously mentioned that all active state-registered cryptocurrency exchanges would be eligible to participate.
In 2022, Indonesia's deputy trade minister, Jerry Sambuaga, proposed several policy adjustments in response to the growing interest in the physical transactions of cryptoassets. These included a requirement for two-thirds of the directors and commissioners of cryptocurrency companies to be Indonesian citizens. Data from Bappebti reveals that Indonesia remains an attractive market for the cryptocurrency industry, with approximately 4% of the country's population, roughly under 11 million people, having invested in cryptocurrencies in 2021.
The launch of Indonesia's national cryptocurrency exchange is seen as a significant development in the country's cryptocurrency ecosystem, with stakeholders expressing optimism about its potential impact. The exchange's implementation will now provide a regulated and legal platform for trading digital assets within Indonesia.
