JPMorgan Chase brought its dollar deposit token, JPM Coin, to the Ethereum mainnet on October 19, 2026, giving approved institutional clients a second public blockchain option for transferring bank-backed dollar deposits. The move expands JPM Coin beyond Base, the Coinbase-built layer-2 network where the token first launched in November 2025.

The Ethereum Deployment

JPMorgan's Kinexys division, the bank's blockchain unit, deployed JPM Coin, traded under the ticker JPMD, on Ethereum's mainnet on October 19, 2026, according to Bloomberg. The token represents a digital claim on US dollar deposits held at JPMorgan, carrying the same credit profile as commercial bank money rather than functioning as a stablecoin. Access remains restricted to institutional clients who are formally approved and vetted by the bank, with no retail availability, according to Cryptopolitan.

JPMorgan's Case for Ethereum

Emma Landriault, head of Kinexys Labs at JPMorgan's blockchain division, said the bank selected Ethereum because the network offers greater liquidity than rival chains and is already used extensively by institutional clients, according to Bloomberg. Landriault added that expanding JPM Coin's availability is intended to serve both crypto-native firms seeking blockchain payment rails and traditional financial institutions that need a digital token to settle trades or post collateral for tokenized assets, per crypto.news. JPMorgan had previously signaled plans in January 2026 to also extend JPM Coin to the Canton Network, a separate blockchain built for regulated financial institutions.

Token Mechanics and Access

JPM Coin allows approved clients to send and receive dollar funds within seconds, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, rather than being limited to the multi-day settlement windows and business-hour restrictions of traditional bank transfers, according to Bloomberg. Clients access the service through Blockchain Deposit Accounts, which link standard bank balances to corresponding blockchain-based deposit records, according to crypto.news. JPMorgan continues to manage the underlying relationship between the token and the commercial bank deposit it represents, meaning the deposit itself never leaves the bank's traditional ledger.

Scale and Prior Usage

JPM Coin has processed more than $3 trillion in cumulative transaction volume since its original 2019 launch as an institution-to-institution payment tool, according to cryptoticker.io. The token was rebranded under JPMorgan's Kinexys division, formerly known as Onyx, in November 2024. Before this Ethereum deployment, JPM Coin had operated on Base for roughly 11 months following its November 2025 launch there.

Distinguishing JPM Coin From Stablecoins

JPM Coin is legally and structurally distinct from a stablecoin, since it represents a direct claim on a bank deposit rather than a reserve-backed token issued outside the traditional banking system, according to Cryptopolitan. This distinction places JPM Coin under existing bank deposit regulatory frameworks rather than stablecoin-specific rules such as the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation. The token's institutional-only access model also means it is not traded on public markets and is not designed to be held or transferred by individual consumers, per cryptoticker.io.
