The Maine Treasurer's Office has released a report highlighting the interest of U.S. states in officially managing abandoned and unclaimed cryptocurrency assets. The report acknowledges that Maine is currently unprepared to handle cryptocurrencies, stating, "Our office does not currently handle cryptocurrency, but programs like unclaimed property may need to begin addressing abandoned cryptocurrency accounts." Maine has over $328 million in unclaimed property, and the report suggests a need for reforms to address emerging issues such as technology, ACH payments, and cryptocurrencies.
Maine's finance minister expresses interest in reforms that would allow the state to handle abandoned crypto assets in the future. Despite lacking clear authority to hold recovered crypto assets, the report indicates a potential shift in the state's approach to managing such digital assets. Unclaimed cryptocurrencies are a broader phenomenon, evident in the Ethereum ecosystem where millions of dollars in ETH from the 2014 Ether Pre-sale event remain unclaimed in pre-sale wallets.
The report also touches on the reluctance of the Maine Democratic Party to return a $100,000 donation from Sam Bankman-Fried, founder of FTX. This comes after seven guilty verdicts in the FTX-SBF case. Meanwhile, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase launched a recovery tool in 2022, allowing the retrieval of unsupported ERC-20 tokens erroneously sent to an exchange address. The tool enables the direct transfer of unsupported assets to a self-hosted wallet without exposing private keys, using patent-pending technology.
The inability to recover cryptocurrencies sent to unsupported wallets has led to a rise in unclaimed digital assets. Coinbase's recovery tool addresses this issue by providing the Ethereum TXID of the transaction and the contract address of the lost asset, facilitating the recovery of lost funds. The evolving landscape prompts a need for states to consider incorporating crypto assets into their unclaimed property programs to ensure comprehensive management of abandoned digital assets.
