Web3 wallet provider MetaMask has warned its users about “false rumors” of an alleged MetaMask airdrop that appears to have been circulating on social media.
According to a MetaMask tweet on March 28, “quite a few rumors have been floating around” about a March 31 MetaMask snapshot or airdrop. "These rumors are not only false, they are dangerous. They create opportunities for scammers and phishers," MetaMask warns.
Cointelegraph has identified a number of Twitter accounts claiming to be associated with MetaMask or the MetaMask token airdrop. MetaMask denied rumors of an imminent airdrop and urged users to be vigilant against fake sites in the coming days. The most recent rumor may be related to a “fireside chat” session at ETHDenver 2023 on March 14 with ConsenSys CEO and Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin, in which he reiterated that his company is “actively working to decentralize” MetaMask. He later reportedly confirmed that the team intends to launch the token.
Lubin also first hinted at the MetaMask token in a Nov. 8, 2021 tweet, saying, “Wen $MASK? Stay tuned.” While MetaMask has debunked the upcoming airdrop, many responses from the community indicate that they still hope the airdrop is still possible, just at a later date. Backed by rumors, activity on MetaMask nearly tripled, with data from DappRadar showing that the number of transactions rose to 21,460 on March 27 from a baseline of around 8,000.
Rumors of an airdrop for MetaMask in November 2021 followed the recent airdrop of the Ethereum name service and Lubin mentioned the token, so there has been a similar flurry of activity.
