Recent analysis conducted by experts from Omnia Health, Iran Public Health Journal, and Medical Tourism Journal underscores the potential of telemedicine technologies based on virtual universes to streamline patient access and enhance satisfaction among medical tourists.
Medical tourism entails individuals traveling abroad to receive medical treatment, motivated by factors such as perceived quality of care, cost-effectiveness, or specialized services unavailable in their home country. The concept gained traction in 2022 when researchers from Shiraz University of Medical Sciences advocated for leveraging virtual universes to prepare patients for medical tourism. They highlighted the ability of Metaverse simulations to familiarize patients with destination locales and hospital environments, thereby easing apprehensions, reducing stress, and fostering stronger doctor-patient relationships.
The medical tourism industry, valued at approximately $54 billion in 2020, has encountered hurdles due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a projected decline to $47 billion by 2024. However, industry forecasts anticipate a resurgence, with estimates projecting a value exceeding $111 billion by the decade's end. This growth trajectory, reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.58%, underscores the sector's resilience and potential for expansion.
