In the first quarter of 2024, MicroStrategy, the leading corporate holder of Bitcoin, reported a net loss of $53.1 million. This loss was primarily attributed to a digital asset impairment loss of $191.6 million, marking a substantial increase from the same period in 2023. Despite this setback, the company's revenue experienced a 5.5% decline from the first quarter of the previous year, amounting to $115.2 million, according to MicroStrategy's first-quarter data.
Interestingly, MicroStrategy has yet to adopt the new digital asset fair value accounting standard. This standard would reflect a 65% increase in Bitcoin's fair value during the quarter. Consequently, the company's Bitcoin book value stands at $5.07 billion, or $23,680 per Bitcoin, under traditional accounting methods, contrasting with $15.2 billion under the fair value method.
Despite advocating for the new standard in a letter to the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) in May 2023, MicroStrategy has not implemented it. The FASB later revised its rules to require fair value reporting for digital assets in fiscal years starting after December 15, 2024.
In April, MicroStrategy continued to expand its Bitcoin holdings by acquiring an additional 122 Bitcoins for $7.8 million. Currently, the company holds 214,400 Bitcoins valued at $13.5 billion, with an average purchase price of $35,180. MicroStrategy President and CEO Phong Le highlighted the company's successful capital raising efforts in the first quarter, raising $1.5 billion through two convertible note debt issuances. This enabled the acquisition of an additional 25,250 Bitcoins, marking the 14th consecutive quarter of asset expansion for the company.
Despite Bitcoin's impressive 65% rally in the first quarter, MicroStrategy's shares experienced volatility, initially soaring by over 170% to $1,704 by the end of March. However, they have since declined to $1,292. This fluctuation underscores the dynamic nature of both cryptocurrency markets and the companies heavily invested in them.
