Cryptocurrency exchange OKX has expanded its existing partnership with the McLaren Formula 1 racing team, securing prominent branding space on the team's car for the 2024 F1 season. OKX's logo will be prominently featured on the side pods of the McLaren F1 car in 20 of the season's 24 races. The car's design for 2024, inspired by the "Stealth Mode" theme from the 2023 Singapore and Japanese Grands Prix, will integrate OKX-McLaren branding elements.
Haider Rafique, OKX's Chief Marketing Officer, explained the decision to expand the sponsorship with McLaren, citing significant gains in brand visibility through the partnership. He emphasized the strategic value of the sidepod placement on an F1 car, which offers high visibility for advertisers. Rafique highlighted the impressive reach of the partnership, with over 3 billion impressions on TV and online, leveraging Formula 1's global audience to enhance OKX's market presence and recognition.
The partnership extends beyond brand visibility, enabling OKX to connect directly with McLaren's fan base through special events. One notable event was the OKX Racing Club's live gathering at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, which saw over 7,000 attendees and a guest appearance from F1 driver Lando Norris. During this event, 3,000 new OKX Web3 wallets were created, showcasing the impact of such activations. A survey conducted post-event indicated that 80% of attendees were keen on learning more about the exchange, reflecting a strong interest in Web3 and digital finance among McLaren fans.
Rafique expressed confidence in the long-term nature of OKX's partnership with McLaren, envisioning a future where the association between OKX, Web3, and McLaren in F1 is as iconic as some of the sport's historic partnerships. He hopes that this partnership will be enduring, drawing parallels to the legendary association of Ayrton Senna with McLaren. While OKX plans to continue this collaboration, the specifics of the financial arrangement and future plans beyond 2025 remain undisclosed.
Reflecting on the growing involvement of the cryptocurrency sector in Formula 1, Rafique noted the sport's diverse and extensive global appeal, which aligns well with the increasing mainstream adoption of cryptocurrencies. He mentioned the U.S. Bitcoin ETF's approval as an example of this expanding influence. OKX initially joined forces with McLaren in May 2022, and the partnership has since evolved, with the OKX brand featuring on the MCL60 race car in 2023. This trend is mirrored by other crypto platforms like Crypto.com, which has been a significant sponsor of Formula 1 since 2021 and also supports the Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant F1 team.
