A spokesperson from Paxos clarified that the recent decoupling of the Pax Dollar (USDP) stablecoin was primarily attributed to issues with the pricing aggregator, rather than any inherent flaws within the protocol itself. They emphasized that the platform's pricing data is sourced from various trading venues, and fluctuations in prices across these venues can impact the aggregated price displayed by platforms.
The decoupling incident occurred amidst a significant surge in USDP's market capitalization, briefly escalating from $140 million to $181 million when the stablecoin's price reached $1.29. However, the market capitalization swiftly reverted to $140 million as USDP regained parity with the U.S. dollar. Presently, USDP maintains a market capitalization of $134 million.
Despite temporary price fluctuations, Paxos assured that USDP will consistently remain redeemable at its fair value through their platform. They reaffirmed their commitment to treating USDP as equivalent to $1, with customers having the option to create and redeem USDP at this value through Paxos, facilitated by their 24/7 1:1 redemption APIs.
Ranked as the 13th largest stablecoin by market capitalization according to CoinMarketCap data, Paxos' USDP remains a significant player in the stablecoin market. Additionally, recent reports indicated that an unidentified trader liquidated $529,000 worth of Circle USD tokens shortly after Pax USD surged to $1.18, as reported by on-chain security company PeckShield.
Traders utilizing different platforms are advised to exercise caution and closely monitor the platform's order books to mitigate similar risks in the future. It is recommended to carefully assess the order book before executing larger trades, particularly for stablecoins, and consider implementing limit orders to manage risk effectively. Notably, Pax Dollar has experienced notable price fluctuations in the past, hitting an all-time low of $0.87 on March 13, 2020, and reaching a high of $2.02 on November 16, 2021, as recorded by CoinMarketCap.
