Polygon has partnered with Unstoppable Domains to introduce the ability to create Web3 "polygon" domain names. The product will allow users to log into Web3 applications, use human-readable wallet addresses and create decentralized websites.
The service will be available to an estimated 180 million users and 40,000 services in the Polygon blockchain ecosystem. Unstoppable Domains uses Polygon to mint decentralized domain names with zero gas fees. To date, more than 2.7 million domain names have been registered on the Polygon blockchain.
Users will be able to use ".polygon" domains to create digital identities compatible with 750 apps, games, and metaverse platforms. These can be used to log into web applications such as cryptocurrency wallet addresses and decentralized websites. Unstoppable Domains also allows users to create profiles that can connect to social media channels and act as digital identities across Web3 platforms and networks.
A statement from Sanket Shah, vice president of business development at Polygon Labs, emphasized the importance of unlocking the digital identities that users have for Polygon users:
“Web3 domains will provide our community with digital identities they fully own, so they can log into dapps without revealing personal information, and conduct crypto transactions without lengthy wallet addresses.” Starting March 16th, Unstoppable Domains will also provide access to premium ".polygon" games and digital domains.
Decentralized name services such as Unstoppable Domains and Ethereum Name Service (ENS) have become popular over the past year, with a huge increase in the number of registered domain names.
U.S. cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase partnered with Unstoppable Domains to offer payment services via domain handles instead of crypto addresses in August 2020. Coinbase then partnered with ENS in September 2022 to provide users with free "name.cb.id" usernames to replace alpha-digital wallet addresses with human-readable alternatives.
