Online discussion platform Reddit has deployed its third-generation blockchain-based digital collectibles, dubbed "Reddit Avatars," on the Polygon blockchain, with community members and collectors expressing their enthusiasm for the highly anticipated product. view.
First launched in July 2022, the Non-Fungible Token (NFT) Avatar is designed to allow artists to create and sell their work. Additionally, whenever a user purchases a collectible, it can also be set as an avatar on Reddit's site. The avatars came out in August 2022, generating thousands of dollars in sales for the artists.
On April 5th, Reddit deployed a contract for Gen 3 avatars on the Polygon blockchain. This led many users to predict that the avatars would sell out within minutes, while others praised Reddit's marketing and branding abilities. One collector who worked on the first and second generation heads expressed their excitement, saying the new ones had the potential to sell out "in minutes." Meanwhile, other users lauded Reddit’s successful marketing efforts to change the NFT narrative, from anti-NFT users to neutral and pro-NFT.
While some were very excited about the release, others felt it might not sell as expected and described the payment process as "cumbersome". Reddit’s NFTs have seen a spike in transaction volume. On October 24, 2022, the series hit an all-time high with $3 million worth of transactions by wallet holders. At the time, transaction volume hit $1.5 million in 24 hours, almost a third of the total $4.1 million in volume. On October 26, the series also entered OpenSea's top 10 best-selling series of the week.
