Revolut, a London-based fintech company, has unveiled a new integration that enables customers in the UK and European Economic Area (EEA) to buy cryptocurrencies directly through MetaMask. The announcement, made on March 6, marks a significant step for Revolut users, allowing them to purchase various tokens directly into their MetaMask wallets using their fiat currency and debit or credit card balances. With a reported user base of over 40 million and support for 18 fiat currencies, Revolut's integration with MetaMask aims to streamline the process of acquiring cryptocurrencies for its vast user network.
As part of the integration, more than 20 different tokens will be accessible for purchase, including popular options like Ethereum, USDC, Tether, and Shiba Inu. This move by Revolut may also be seen as a response to recent regulatory challenges, as the fintech firm has encountered hurdles related to its cryptocurrency services in the past. Notably, in August 2023, Revolut suspended all crypto services for US users, followed by a suspension of cryptocurrency purchases by UK users in January, prompted by new regulations from the Financial Conduct Authority.
One notable aspect facilitated by this integration concerns Know Your Customer (KYC) checks. Revolut app users adding funds to their MetaMask wallets will bypass verification checks, leveraging existing verification processes within the Revolut ecosystem. Typically involving the collection and validation of personal information, the KYC process is an integral aspect of regulatory compliance in financial services.
Lorenzo Santos, senior product manager at Consensys, the parent company of MetaMask, emphasized that the partnership aims to cater to user preferences, offering them greater control over their cryptocurrency holdings in a seamless manner through a trusted platform. Santos highlighted the significance of promoting broader cryptocurrency adoption and expanding accessibility to the cryptocurrency world for more individuals.
MetaMask, known for its user-friendly interface and extensive features, allows users to purchase cryptocurrencies directly within the wallet using various payment methods, including credit and debit cards, bank transfers, and digital wallets like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal. Recent notable integrations with MetaMask include the ability to withdraw funds from its crypto wallet to its Visa debit card, providing users with convenient access to their digital assets at millions of merchant locations worldwide.
