A company called OVR Technology showed off a virtual reality headset that contained eight scents that could be combined to create a variety of scents.
At the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), a Metaverse-focused company demonstrated that the sense of smell has been added to a virtual reality (VR) experience.
A recent report by consulting firm McKinsey & Company predicted that the Metaverse could generate $5 trillion in value by 2030. However, the report notes that Metaverse's success requires a more developed human aspect that provides a positive experience for users. One of those catalysts could be the integration of smell and touch into the VR experiences showcased at the recent CES.
According to Fortune, one of the companies, OVR Technology, showed off a headset with a container that holds eight aromas that can be mixed together to create a variety of scents. The VR headset is reportedly scheduled for release later in 2023. An early version used for fragrance marketing lets users smell everything from roasted marshmallows to roses.
According to Aaron Wisniewski, CEO of OVR Technology, extended reality will soon be integrated with commerce, entertainment, social connection, education and well-being. The CEO emphasized that scents give these experiences "unrivaled power."
Aurora Townsend, an executive at FireFlare Games, also shared that once the technology becomes readily available in the market, their company will launch a VR dating app that also incorporates immersive sensations such as touch.
Meanwhile, consumers may not be too excited about the new development. CES attendee Ozan Ozaskinli tested some haptic products and emphasized that it's still "very far from reality." However, the technology consultant also said that it could potentially be integrated into online meetings because users can actually feel something through the technology.
Back in 2022, blockchain technology and metaverse swept the CES event. Various figures in the cryptocurrency space attended the event, including executives from the now embattled FTX and Celsius Network. Brands showcased blockchain and Metaverse developments through their booths, including Samsung, announcing an NFT platform.
