American rapper and actor Snoop Dogg has been revealed as one of the co-founders of Web3-powered live-streaming app “Shiller” adding yet another Web3 partnership for the famous hip-hop artist.
The app is described as a "live streaming platform" that aims to combine Web3 technology with live streaming content. The rap star was named as a co-founder of the app, along with tech entrepreneur Sam Jones.
This follows a wave of Web3 collaborations initiated by Snoop Dogg last year. In April last year, Snoop Dogg partnered with the Sandbox metaverse to launch an NFT collection called "Snoop Avatars" and released a hip-hop single called "A Hard Working Man," followed by an airdrop of 50,000 NFTs.
On Aug. 29, the rap star also performed on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards' Virtual Space Transformation in collaboration with Yuga Labs, the team behind Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and CryptoPunks. Snoop Dogg also recently partnered with crypto casino Roobet, where he will serve as the company’s “Chief Ganjaroo Officer,” according to a March 1 statement from Roobet.
As for Shiller, blockchain will play an important role in the platform, allowing content creators to "token-gate" their streams and promote non-fungible tokens or other products from e-commerce sites. These content creators can be paid in cryptocurrencies such as ether Or NFT, which can be cashed out as fiat currency. It was supposed to release in January, but has been pushed back to April, according to a recent update from Schiller on March 2.
Shiller's launch appears to be part of a broader creator economy movement, in which Web3 may play a role. "Web1" enabled users to write HTML and read content, while "Web2" enabled user-to-user interaction brought to the masses by a handful of social media monopolies such as Facebook, Google, and YouTube.
The "Web3" movement aims to remove these intermediaries by providing creators with full ownership of their content and the resulting monetization. Decentralized messaging platforms are also starting to emerge, with one called "Damus" trying to become a "Twitter killer".
Backed by Jack Dorsey, Damus launched on the Apple App Store on February 1st. It is built on a decentralized network that supports encrypted end-to-end private messaging called "Nostr". The platform comes with Bitcoin, Payments on the Lightning Network.
