In response to an ongoing phishing scam targeting its users, Terra, a Layer-1 blockchain platform, has temporarily taken down its website to safeguard users. The official announcement, made on August 22 via X (formerly Twitter), stated that the domain " terra (dot) currency" has been frozen to prevent further phishing scams, while a complete resolution is currently underway.
Terra has strongly advised all users to avoid interacting with any websites associated with the aforementioned domain until the Foundation provides an official "all clear" notice. The announcement also touched on recent updates related to Terra's multi-chain wallet, Station Wallet .This wallet allows users to access decentralized applications across various platform blockchain networks, including Terra, Juno, and Kujira. An update has been rolled out to enhance security, and users are encouraged to wait for a safety verification before using the Station desktop and mobile applications.
Furthermore, the announcement provides links to updated browser extensions and apps for users to interact with the Station Wallet. This decision to freeze the website came shortly after Terra's site was hacked over the weekend in a phishing attack aimed at deceiving users. Prior to the freeze , Terra issued warnings on August 19 and 20, cautioning users against interacting with any websites bearing the Terra currency domain.
Terra's recent challenges echo its previous struggles from over a year ago, when the platform experienced a major collapse in its digital ecosystem. This event, which occurred in May 2022, led to a $40 billion loss in the crypto ecosystem and resulted in turmoil across the industry. Despite these setbacks, a faction within the Terra community, led by co-founder Do Kwon, opted to remain and work on revitalizing the project. This led to the launch of Terra 2.0, aimed at recovering the lost funds.
As of now, Terra's token, LUNA, holds a market capitalization of $152.7 million. In response to the news of Terra Money's recent hack, the token's value experienced a sharp decline, falling by 22% over the past week and over 70% in the past year, as reported by CoinGecko.
