Meta opens Horizon Worlds to teens to attract more users
Teens in the US and Canada can now use the virtual reality (VR) app Horizon Worlds after major tech company Meta opened the app on April 18. Previously restricted to those 18 and older. The decision came after Horizon Worlds fell far short of its monthly active user target for 2022, recording an average of just 280,000 for the year, according to data site Statista, against its target of 500,000.
Various advocacy and security groups are urging Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to halt plans to allow minors into his Metaverse. An open letter dated April 14 argued that Meta should wait for more peer-reviewed research on the potential risks of allowing young people into the metaverse. The letter claims minors will face harassment and privacy violations on the VR app, which is still in its early stages. Meta's announcement appears to address these concerns, as it focuses largely on the ways in which it plans to mitigate these risks through such features Parental monitoring tools and limiting interactions between teens and adult strangers.
