The new feature will allow users to use "coins" to "reward" individual tweets, with a minimum threshold of $50.
No mention of encryption or blockchain technology can be found in newly leaked images of “Twitter Coin,” a secret digital asset the platform is developing.
After tech bloggers Jane Manchun Wong and Nima Owji first leaked the project in early December, many in the community had been hoping that the secretive “Twitter Coins” project would involve cryptocurrencies in some way.
Dogecoin member, The community is especially hopeful given Twitter CEO Elon Musk's relationship with the token. At a Twitter Spaces event on Dec. 4, Musk said he remains interested in integrating cryptocurrencies with social media platforms.
However, a newly leaked image of the project’s development shared by Wong and Owji on Jan. 10 makes no mention of encryption or blockchain technology. Owji tweeted that so far there have been no indications from any leaks that the cryptocurrency will involve Twitter Coin: "It appears to be an in-app currency that supports creators. I didn't find anything related to a *crypto* currency."
While it is unlikely that these coins will exist on the blockchain, it is possible to add crypto as a payment method via Stripe, allowing users to use crypto to buy Twitter coins in the future. Stripe leaned toward supporting crypto payments last year, and Twitter also tested USDC payments through Stripe last year to allow creators to monetize their content through their social media sites.
For now, it appears that those earning Twitter Rewards will have to wait until they've earned at least $50 to redeem, which is the same minimum payout for those who take advantage of Twitter's existing "Super Follow" feature.
Last week, Wong said Twitter's awards would include reactions such as "Mind Blown," "Bravo," "Bullseye," "Gem" and "Crown." This response which would require coins to give users tweets is similar to Reddit Gold, a feature Reddit users pay to buy “gold” to identify threads or posts they find touching or helpful.
