The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is emerging as a preferred destination for Bitcoin mining in the Middle East, solidifying its position as a pro-Web3 country. With over 30 free trade zones and a growing contribution to Bitcoin mining hashrate, the UAE has attracted cryptocurrency-focused companies to its shores.
The country's mining journey began when Marathon Digital, a bitcoin miner, partnered with Zero Two, the digital assets arm of the Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund. Together, they established two mines in Abu Dhabi, boasting a combined capacity of 250 megawatts (M W) . Abu Dhabi has become a focal point for crypto mining activities due to its energy efficiency and its status as the UAE's trading hub.
According to Hashrate Index, the UAE currently has a total Bitcoin mining capacity of approximately 400 MW, accounting for around 4% of the global hashrate. While countries like the United States, China, Russia, and Kazakhstan dominate the global computing power for Bitcoin, the UAE has the potential to climb higher with its available resources. As a significant player in the energy market, the UAE has been transitioning from traditional oil and gas reserves to solar and nuclear power, expanding its renewable energy capacity.
The UAE experiences significant fluctuations in electricity demand between the hottest and coldest months, resulting in substantial losses in generation. Bitcoin mining can help address this gap by utilizing the excess electricity. With a focus on using clean energy, the UAE is well-positioned to leverage its growing share of nuclear and renewable power sources in the coming years. Additionally, the country's zero-tax policy provides a significant advantage for miners, as they can register in one of the UAE's free trade zones and avoid corporate taxes, VAT , and import duties.
By capitalizing on its energy surplus, favorable taxation policies, and attractive business environment, the UAE aims to establish itself as a prominent player in the Bitcoin mining industry, especially as it continues to transition towards cleaner and more sustainable able energy sources.
