Ubisoft, renowned for creating popular gaming franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, has recently stepped into the XPLA blockchain ecosystem as a node validator, marking its latest venture into Web3, blockchain, and cryptocurrency domains. This strategic move, orchestrated through its Strategic Innovation Labs, positions Ubisoft to extend its involvement beyond mere node validation within the XPLA network.
According to XPLA's official statement, Ubisoft will actively engage in governance proposal decisions as part of its collaboration with the blockchain network. XPLA, a layer-1 open-source blockchain built on Tendermint, is slated to launch its mainnet in August 2022, with a primary objective of fostering the transition from Web2 to Web3 gaming experiences, particularly by introducing a "play to own" game mode.
XPLA boasts an impressive lineup of renowned gaming franchises integrated into its blockchain, including The Walking Dead: All-Stars and Call of Duty: Chronicles. The addition of Ubisoft to its ecosystem signifies a significant milestone for XPLA, reflecting its continuous growth trajectory and expanding network of validators.
Incorporated in Rennes, France, Ubisoft stands as one of the global gaming industry's behemoths, having amassed a staggering track record of success with approximately 800 million game copies sold and numerous accolades under its belt. With a market capitalization of $2.75 billion at the time of this announcement, Ubisoft ranks as Europe's second-largest gaming company, trailing only behind Poland's CD Projekt Red.
Having been an early adopter and advocate for Web3 and blockchain technologies, Ubisoft's foray into this space dates back to 2021 when it unveiled a comprehensive manifesto outlining its blockchain and Web3 initiatives, with a strong emphasis on empowering players and fostering ownership within gaming ecosystems. Additionally, Ubisoft has made substantial investments in blockchain game development, as evidenced by its partnership with Hong Kong-based developer Animoca Brands, signaling its commitment to the evolving landscape of blockchain gaming and the broader Web3 revolution.
