Hayden Adams, creator of the Uniswap protocol and CEO of Uniswap Labs, recently took to Twitter to express surprise at scams involving individuals creating fake Uniswap websites.
In a tweet, Adams said he was amazed by the sophistication of the scam, stressing that it took a lot of effort. He further revealed that scammers have incorporated Chinese community content into their schemes, even including links on their deceptive websites directing users to legitimate Uniswap applications.
To add an extra layer of credibility to their scheme, the scammers went to great lengths to organize an hour-long Zoom recording featuring individuals posing as senior Uniswap executives. This well-planned video presentation is designed to trick viewers into believing the hoax is real . After watching the video, Adams expressed his confusion, saying: "The video is crazy. No idea who those people are." To clear up any misunderstanding, Adams made it clear that neither Uniswap nor the Uniswap Foundation has any form of affiliation or involvement with the video or the individuals featured in it.
Crypto Twitter speculates that the scam may have involved around a video showing people in Shenzhen, China promoting Uniswap token. The video is reportedly titled “1st Uniswap Asia Summit” and “Guest: Uniswap CEO.” Adams and his team have been working to combat and mitigate the scam. Their efforts involved taking down domains used to create fake websites. Twitter user Roland shared his surprise at the events described in Adams' tweet. Despite living near Shenzhen, he said he was unfamiliar with such an event and speculated that it may have been carefully organized due to China's strict cryptocurrency regulations.
The People's Bank of China banned cryptocurrency exchanges from operating in the country in 2018, claiming they encouraged unsanctioned public financing. China has banned all cryptocurrency businesses since September 2021.
