Uniswap, a decentralized exchange (DEX), is introducing an extension for its native wallet, enhancing user accessibility and functionality within the ecosystem. The announcement on February 27 revealed that interested users could join a waiting list for a uni.eth username, with access to the Uniswap Extension Beta granted in the order of application.
Similar to existing self-service wallets like MetaMask, the Uniswap Wallet extension empowers users to perform various actions directly from their web browsers, including sending, receiving, purchasing, and exchanging different tokens and altcoins. Leveraging the Ethereum name service, the uni.eth domain enables users to convert their 0x addresses into personalized usernames. Notably, over 100,000 uni.eth subdomains have already been claimed as of February 25.
The value of Uniswap's namesake token has seen a notable surge of over 80% in the past month, largely propelled by a recent proposal advocating for rewards to users on protocol fees. Erin Koen, the head of governance at the Uniswap Foundation, introduced the proposal, emphasizing its aim to incentivize UNI holders who stake and delegate tokens. In a subsequent post on February 27, Koen highlighted the proposal's focus on maintaining Uniswap DEX's immutability, optimizing security, and fostering experimentation.
By prioritizing immutability, Uniswap seeks to mitigate the risks associated with protocol upgrades, particularly vulnerabilities and potential fund hacks stemming from introduced bugs. The developers underscored the importance of learning from past incidents where major protocols fell victim to exploits due to bugs introduced during upgrades. While acknowledging the trade-offs involved, Uniswap aims to enhance future security by eliminating certain functions like setOwner.
Discussions surrounding the proposal are currently ongoing as the Uniswap community deliberates on its potential implications and benefits. Notably, Uniswap plans to roll out the V4 DEX in the third quarter of 2024, marking a significant milestone following a substantial upgrade to the Ethereum network.
