Apple's standing as the world's most valuable company is no longer assured as it has dipped below the $3 trillion threshold, currently vying with Microsoft for the top position. This competition emerged in mid-2023 when Microsoft initially surpassed Apple as the world's most valuable company. Although holding the second spot is still significant, Apple faces challenges competing with Microsoft's focus on artificial intelligence (AI). Analysts suggest that Apple's struggle may stem from its relatively weaker position in AI compared to Microsoft and Nvidia, both expected to outpace the S&P 500 average through 2024.
Microsoft and Nvidia, experiencing all-time highs in 2023, are considered strong contenders for continued success in 2024. Nvidia, particularly, emerged as the best performer in the S&P 500. In contrast, Apple's shares remained stagnant in the initial month of 2024. Experts anticipate robust Q1 results for Nvidia and Microsoft, attributing their success to the growing interest in generative AI products and services. Microsoft's AI-driven advancements are linked to its investment in OpenAI, a leading player in generative AI.
Nvidia's remarkable growth is fueled by its graphics processing unit (GPU), widely favored in generative AI labs. Meanwhile, nearly half of Apple's 2023 profits originated from iPhone sales. However, growth in this segment might be constrained in 2024 due to increasing competition from Huawei in China and diminishing global interest in outdated voice assistant technology like Siri. If Apple lags behind its AI-centric rivals—Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Nvidia, and Tesla—in the coming quarters, the company may need to innovate similarly to its transformative "iPhone moment."
There are indications that Apple is secretly developing its generative AI system, allegedly named "Ajax," and testing it against various AI models, including ChatGPT, as revealed in the beta version of iOS 17.4. This suggests Apple's efforts to benchmark its proprietary system against existing AI models. If Apple succeeds in enhancing Siri's capabilities to match those of advanced models like GPT-4, it could mark a significant breakthrough for the company, akin to its revolutionary introduction of the iPhone. Despite the rising wave of generative AI, no company has yet identified a killer app or hardware that delivers a compelling consumer-grade experience. For over a billion iPhone users worldwide, the potential for an AI interface device may already be present in their pockets.
