Unstoppable Domains (UD) has introduced an instant messaging feature for owners of Web3 usernames, as announced by lead engineer Aaron Quirk on August 23. Users possessing usernames like .crypto, .wallet, and .polygon, which are registered with UD, can now message one another using apps utilizing the Extensible Messaging Transfer Protocol (XMTP). Notable applications that support this feature include the UD iOS app, Coinbase Wallet, Lens Protocol apps like Luster and Buttrfly, among others. While messaging is currently available on iOS, an Android version is in the works.
The messaging system relies on XMTP for full encryption and secure message delivery, ensuring that messages remain accessible even if Unstoppable Domains discontinues its operations. Quirk's announcement reassured users that their messages will be preserved and accessible, regardless of the platform's future status.
Web3 usernames, in existence since 2017, offer a way for crypto users to associate their complex crypto addresses with more memorable names. This enhances ease of use and communication. Previously, these encrypted usernames primarily facilitated payments, but the aim is to expand their utility to encompass other applications, like messaging. Coinbase Wallet rolled out a messaging system in July, enabling users to communicate using their .eth or .cb.id usernames. However, this integration did not extend to usernames registered through Unstoppable Domains, w hi is now resolved as per Quirk's announcement.
Furthermore, Quirk shared that Unstoppable Domains plans to integrate with Push Protocol, enabling username owners to receive notifications from Web3 projects. This feature will enable projects to communicate with users via the Unstoppable Domains website or app. Notably, Unstoppable Domains previously partnered with Binance. US to allow users to register domain names ending in .BinanceUS, and it also reached an agreement with rival Ethereum Name Service (ENS), enabling the sale of ENS .eth names on the UD store.
